For the world congress of soil science (2022), ‘Grounded' is a campaign that aims to DRIVE a new respect for soils, to inspire a new generation of soil researchers, scientists and protectors. We must remember that soils underpin our ecosystems, our climate and our human culture…
...we must stay #Grounded
Soils UNDERPIN AND determine the healthy function of ALL ecosystem services, including food productivity, climate regulation, maintaining biodiversity, water and energy. WITH THIS, Since the 20th century, the management of soils has gained significant importance throughout global policy and research.
However, THE pressures OF land-use CHANGE, human development and climate change ARE STILL CONTINUING TO INCREASE. AS A RESULT, the risk of soil degradation is alarmingly HIGH, AND SUBSEQUENT IMPLICATIONS OF THIS INCLUDE INCREASING THE RATE OF global warming, damaging ecosystems and declining food production. THEREFORE, it is crucial to make the protection and restoration of soils a global priority, SO WE NEED TO INSPIRE A NEWGENERATION OF DEDICATED AND INNOVATIVE SOIL SCIENTISTS.
COMMONLY SOILS ARE ADDRESSED FROM A FARMING PERSPECTIVE, YET THIS campaign EXPLOREs THE ROLE OF SOILS BEYONDFARMING; INVESTIGATING HOW SOILS COULD MITIGATE AGAINST CLIMATE CHANGE, the relevance of soils in urban spaces AND HOW SOILS SHAPE our CULTURE.
IT’S CRUCIAL TO MAKE THE PROTECTION AND RESTORATION OF SOILS A GLOBAL PRIORITY, AND OVER 3,000 SOIL SCIENTISTS FROM AROUND THE WORLD WILL BE COMING TOGETHER FOR THE WORLD CONGRESS OF SOIL SCIENCE (2022), LED BY THE BRITISH SOCIETY OF SOIL SCIENCE.
